Often, the kitchen mixer is the flagship of our culinary confines and should thus symbolise the style we’ve envisaged for our home. While aesthetics is all well and good, functionality shouldn’t be forgotten either, because you certainly wouldn’t want to opt for a kitchen tap which ends up being impractical. That’s why we thought of compiling a list of the key considerations to be taken when choosing a new kitchen tap.
Needless to say, there are a multitude of different types of taps you can choose from. Firstly, you need to narrow down your choices, because it’s only then you’d be able to make sure you’ve made an informed decision.
What type of mixer do I need?
When you begin to consider all the different types of kitchen mixers and you see the vast variety, you’ll soon see why it merits such thought. Let’s say, for instance, you decide to go for a modern single-lever style. The benefit of a flexible and retractable (or pull-out) pipe, to wash out a large sink is useful. Such a mixer also allows you to switch between a stream and a spray (dual flow). Kitchen taps can be understated or a designer show-piece. Yet they need to be purposeful. Next come aspects of preferred design and finish.
What design should I choose?
Once you’ve narrowed down your choice into your preferred type of tap, design is the next element to think about. Do you want a piece of art to stand out, or a minimalist piece which blends in with the rest of the kitchen décor? Or perhaps a steel spring mixer that matches your industrial apartment style?
Designer – striking, innovative and contemporary designs are bound to impress your guests. Some say that it’s fixtures and fittings define a home and a sink tap can define your kitchen.
Industrial or Commercial – this is often a sought-after option in modern kitchens. Spring necks and commercial grade brushed steel taps execute this type of style.
Minimalist – a kitchen tap doesn’t always need to attract attention, sometimes a simple and straightforward shape is all you need. Beautiful simplicity and functionality can be more than enough.
Low profile – when you have overhead cupboards or don’t want your tap to protrude above your window sill, a design that’s low in height is the ideal choice.
Rustic/Traditional – certain old-style home décors don’t match well with contemporary designs. Thus, you’d need traditional or timeless tapware in this case.
How about its finish?
Kitchen tapware comes in an assortment of finishes. Consider what will match your kitchen décor and meet your usage requirements.
Stainless Steel – great for outdoor installation as it withstands the weather and is the most sanitary of metals.
Chrome or polished steel – this is both traditional and timeless. A mirror finish complements most contemporary décors.
Brushed – popular with matching kitchen appliances (usually brushed stainless steel or brushed nickel).
When it comes to choosing the right kitchen tap, we must acknowledge that it’s a more complex task than it might sound. And sure, while one might argue that it’s just a conduit to take water from under your sink to above your sink, it’s an important fixture as it’s on display and is the most used appliance in the kitchen, and dare we say, around the entire house.
